Maria Zherdeva, born in 1975 in Moscow, Russia, is an artist whose early recognition and unwavering dedication have shaped her into a prominent figure in the world of sculpture and visual expression. From a young age, her innate talent was evident, culminating in her participation in her first art exhibition at the age of eight. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of her profound commitment to the arts.

Maria pursued her passion in a formal education setting, enrolling at university to study textile design and color theory. Her artistic growth was further fostered through training with the eminent monumental graphic artist Vladimir Ilyushchenko from 1992 to 1999. Ilyushchenko, a disciple of the renowned Aleksandr Deyneka, provided Maria with invaluable insights into the intricacies of art. During this period, she also honed her skills in an icon-painting workshop under the guidance of St. Alipy Pechersky, where she mastered layered painting techniques. This experience significantly enhanced her sensitivity to color, structure, and composition, essential elements in her later works.

In 1993, Maria transitioned into professional artistry by working as an illustrator for a children’s publishing house. Simultaneously, she contributed to film projects at the prestigious Mosfilm studio. These roles enriched her understanding of visual storytelling and allowed her to explore different artistic avenues.

As her career progressed, Maria developed a distinct focus on sculpture, particularly high-reliefs. Since 1993, she has employed a unique mixed-media technique that she innovated herself. Her favored materials—clay, wood, and papier-mâché—allow her to express her creative vision fully. Additionally, Maria prefers working with tempera, valuing its vibrancy and responsiveness in her artistic expression.

At the heart of Maria’s creative process lies a rhythmic interplay of form, line, color, and balance. Her professional yet intuitive approach, refined over decades, is driven by a desire for aesthetic harmony rather than emotional narratives or conceptual constraints. This perspective enables her to create works that resonate with viewers on a purely visual level.

Maria’s art has gained recognition across various galleries and museums in the UK, including Falmouth, Truro, and Launceston. Her works can also be found in Redlands and Yucaipa, California, as well as in Ordino, Andorra. Beyond public exhibitions, her sculptures are part of private collections spanning the globe, including countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, South Korea, Germany, Ireland, and Hong Kong. This widespread appreciation highlights the universal appeal of her craft.

Maria Zherdeva’s unwavering commitment to her art, combined with her rich educational background and innovative techniques, has established her as a significant voice in contemporary sculpture. As she continues to evolve as an artist, her works remain a testament to the beauty of form and color, compelling viewers to engage with art in profound and meaningful ways.
