Joseph Goldfedder is a visual artist whose work embodies a unique fusion of creativity and healing, deeply rooted in his experiences and education. Based in West Trenton, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Goldfedder’s artistic expression transcends traditional boundaries, merging the tactile sensations of mark-making with meditative awareness. His drawings serve as sensual expressions, each piece unfolding a personal universe that invites viewers to explore the depths of emotion and interconnectedness.
Goldfedder’s creative process begins with spontaneous doodles on notebook paper, which gradually evolve into intricate works of art. He employs the Sgraffito technique, skillfully carving into layers of material to reveal patterns and textures that emerge like sculpted forms in wet clay. This method involves applying layers of oil pastels and scraping away pigment, allowing for a playful exploration of color and form. The resulting pieces radiate a childlike quality, embracing discovery and chance, where unexpected hues and shapes come to life. Through this vibrant festival of color, darker tones juxtaposed against lighter ones unveil vivid shades beneath, transforming each drawing into a dimensional object that resonates with its own unique emotion.
For Goldfedder, drawing transcends mere artistic expression; it is a spiritual form of communication that weaves together memories and dreams, reminding us of our shared interconnectedness. His background in fine arts, coupled with his experience living in New Mexico, has profoundly influenced his approach to art. After becoming an acupuncturist, he gained a deeper understanding of how energy, or “Qi,” circulates through the body. This knowledge reshaped his artistic practice, fostering a connection between science, creativity, and healing that continues to inspire him.
Goldfedder holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts, a Master of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College. He is also a Certified Medical Intuitive Practitioner, having completed the Practical Path Training Program. Currently, he is studying channeling and mediumship, further expanding his artistic and spiritual horizons. At Goldfedder Wellness, he offers Art for Healing, creating medical and intuitive drawings that further bridge the gap between art and wellness.
His artistic contributions have been recognized in numerous exhibitions, showcasing his work alongside other talented artists. Notable exhibitions include “The Tapestry of Life: Perspective on Healing and Wellness with Color, Textile & Pattern” at West Windsor Arts & Merwick Rehab Hospital in 2023, where he collaborated with Audrey Jakab. He received the Best in Show Award for his piece “Moment” at the 2023 West Windsor Member Art Show and participated in various other exhibitions, including “Radius 14” and “Red Hot Extremism.”
Goldfedder’s accolades extend beyond exhibitions; he has been honored with fellowships and awards, such as his recognition as a fellow at Yaddo in 1992 and receiving an Honorable Mention Prize for Prints and Drawings from the Virginia Commission for the Arts in 1989. His education and experiences have shaped his artistic philosophy, allowing him to create works that resonate with viewers on a profound level.
In essence, Joseph Goldfedder’s art is a celebration of life, healing, and interconnectedness. Through his innovative techniques and spiritual approach, he invites us to explore the depths of our shared human experience, reminding us of the beauty that lies within the complexity of existence.
