From February 7 to March 2, 2025, Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philadelphia will host “BODY,” a solo exhibition by the innovative collage artist Alex Eckman-Lawn. Known for his imaginative layered collages, Eckman-Lawn has spent years cultivating a distinct visual vocabulary through his studio and commercial projects. This exhibition showcases his illustration and storytelling skills in a cohesive narrative inspired by traumatic events from his childhood.

Eckman-Lawn’s artistic journey is deeply intertwined with his past. At the age of twelve, he underwent invasive surgery for scoliosis, resulting in a metal rod fused to his spine. This life-altering experience not only affected his physical mobility but also sparked a creative awakening during his lengthy recovery. As he navigated the challenges of rehabilitation, he began to confront his own mortality and the complexities of the American healthcare system. These themes resonate throughout his work, particularly in “BODY,” where he delves into the emotional weight of his experiences.

The exhibition features a cohesive narrative that draws inspiration from Eckman-Lawn’s childhood memories and dreams. His layered collages evoke feelings of unease, fear, and awe, inviting viewers to engage with the deeper meanings behind each piece. In works like “Unit 01” and “Unit 02,” he juxtaposes anatomical elements with mechanical structures, reflecting his duality as both man and machine. This exploration of vulnerability and resilience is a central theme in his art, as he grapples with the chaos of contemporary life and the environmental and political crises that dominate the news.

Eckman-Lawn’s artistic process is meticulous and transformative. He approaches collage as an illustrator, digitally manipulating and painting images before cutting and assembling them into intricate compositions. His work often features distorted bones and decaying machinery, creating a dreamlike quality that captivates audiences. The layers of his collages invite viewers to look deeper, revealing hidden details that intensify the narrative.

The exhibition’s title, “BODY,” reflects not only the physicality of Eckman-Lawn’s work but also the emotional and psychological dimensions of his experiences. He uses his art to confront the end of the world as he knows it, finding solace in the act of creation. As he states, “The artwork in the exhibition is about me facing the end of the world and understanding how I can still live comfortably inside it.” This sentiment resonates with many, as it speaks to the universal struggle of finding meaning and comfort amid chaos.

Paradigm Gallery + Studio is proud to present this personal collection that expands the capabilities of collage and found images to match the autobiographical experiences expressed in the exhibition. The opening reception will take place on February 7 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Paradigm Arts Building, located at 12 N 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

Alex Eckman-Lawn’s work has garnered recognition in various prestigious venues, including SCOPE Miami Beach and Art on Paper NY. His multi-layered, hand-cut collages have appeared in comic books, album covers, and music videos, showcasing his versatility as an artist. With a BFA in Illustration from the University of the Arts, Eckman-Lawn continues to push the boundaries of collage, merging illustration, sculpture, and personal narrative.

“BODY” promises to be a standout exhibition that not only highlights Alex Eckman-Lawn’s artistic prowess but also invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and the world around them. This exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of art, emotion, and personal narrative.
