Renowned Peruvian artist Jorge Vela recently presented his latest solo exhibition, Maldito Amor [Cursed Love], a deeply emotional and thought-provoking exploration of love in all its unpredictable, poignant, and multifaceted forms. The exhibition, inaugurated on November 8 at Remax Supreme in San Borja, Lima, has been extended and will remain open until December 30, 2024.

The showcase brings together 20 stunning works, including oil paintings and prints, each delving into the intricate dynamics of love and relationships. Inspired by the evocative words of 17th-century poet Francisco de Quevedo—who described love as “burning ice, freezing fire, a wound that hurts but is not felt”—Vela conveys the ineffable through vibrant colors and bold strokes that resonate with the audience.

Highlighted pieces such as Anillos de compromiso [Engagement Rings] and Ella vuelve a casa [She Returns Home] encapsulate the contradictions and raw emotions that define love. These works confront societal norms and reveal intimate narratives of connection, estrangement, and passion.

The exhibition is curated by Vladimir Ramos, who describes Vela’s work as an examination of the “insufferable twists of love” and the “unseen moments that unfold behind closed doors.” Ramos emphasizes that the paintings mirror the universality of love, transcending geographical boundaries—from Vela’s hometown of Moyobamba to cities like Amsterdam, Madrid, and New York.

Jorge Vela was born in 1970 in Moyobamba, Peru, and honed his craft at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Perú, specializing in painting and drawing. Over the years, Vela has exhibited extensively across Peru and internationally, with solo exhibitions in cities like Amsterdam, New York, and Trujillo. His works often blend cultural narratives with personal introspection, reflecting themes of human connection, identity, and emotion.

Following Maldito Amor, Vela is set to participate in a collective exhibition in January 2024, further expanding his repertoire and continuing to captivate audiences with his dynamic storytelling through art. “We are preparing a collective for January at Remax Supreme, this is the company that sells houses, and it is an excellent initiative that private enterprise joins forces for art. As it is a new space, we are putting together everything that will come in 2025, I will be the coordinator of this space”, Jorge said.

This collaboration between Vela and Remax Supreme exemplifies the synergy between the arts and private enterprises, making contemporary art more accessible to the public. Visitors are invited to experience Maldito Amor during office hours at Remax Supreme, located on Avenida Javier Prado Este 1970, San Borja. For more details, visit the exhibition before it concludes and immerse yourself in the poignant artistry of Jorge Vela.
