The iconic and unforgettable Mexican artist Frida Kahlo graces a compelling photographic exhibition at the Museo Storico della Fanteria, showcasing a deeply authentic and intimate side of her life captured through the lens of her friend and lover, Nickolas Muray. Curated by Vittoria Mainoldi, this exhibition offers an immersive journey into Kahlo’s private universe, featuring around 60 photographs, both in color and black and white, that have never before been displayed in Rome.

The photographs, taken between 1937 and 1946, portray Kahlo in various moments and settings—whether alone, with her husband Diego Rivera, amongst friends, or in the tender company of Muray. Muray, celebrated as both a skilled portraitist and a pioneer of color photography, provides an exclusive perspective that reveals Kahlo as a confidante, friend, and romantic partner. His work not only captures her likeness but also illustrates the profound connection she had with Mexican culture, her life experiences, and the people who were integral to her journey.

The exhibition is further enriched by the inclusion of original letters exchanged between Frida and Nickolas during their tumultuous relationship, which spanned until Kahlo’s death in 1954. These letters offer a glimpse into their complex emotional bond—a love marked by both passion and distance. The display also features rare videos that depict the couple in various shared moments, making the viewer feel as if they are stepping into their world.

In addition to the photography, visitors will find eight garments meticulously crafted by indigenous artisans in Mexico, inspired by Kahlo’s distinctive wardrobe, alongside handmade jewelry and accessories that reflect her unique style. A remarkable collection of stamps from various countries rounds out the exhibition, highlighting the diverse influences that permeated Kahlo’s life.

The exhibition “Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray” stands as a poignant tribute to one of Mexico’s most beloved artists. By illuminating the personal side of Kahlo’s life and the relationships that shaped her, this collection invites audiences to connect more deeply with her artistry and legacy. It promises to be an unforgettable experience for anyone who appreciates the profound impact of Frida Kahlo on art and culture.
