New York-based artist Emil Alzamora, born in Lima, Peru, is making waves in the contemporary art scene with his unique approach to sculpting the human form. Renowned for his multidisciplinary practice, Alzamora’s work serves as a profound exploration of transience, beauty, and emotional empathy. As he prepares for a series of exhibitions in 2024, his artistic vision promises to engage audiences in a dialogue about the forces that shape our existence.
Kicking off this series is “Starship Abundance,” an exhibition at the UNF Gallery at MOCA Jacksonville, running from November 14, 2024, to January 25, 2025. Curated by Jenny K. Hager and Lance Vickery, this multidisciplinary exhibition nods to the richness that abounds on Earth. Alzamora’s sculptures in this show range from bronze to ceramic, each piece imbued with a sense of harmony and hope. The central figure of Starship Abundance is Star Suit. This work invites viewers to confront the emotional weight of the narrative while contemplating broader societal themes of the ‘Other.’
Simultaneously, Alzamora will exhibit at Ethan Cohen Gallery in New York City with “Dulce Compañía” [Sweet Company], also from November 14, 2024, to January 25, 2025. This exhibition features larger-than-life naturalistic sculptures that recast historical narratives into psychologically compelling forms. The juxtaposition of a serene nude male figure standing over the lifeless Minotaur challenges viewers to reconcile the horror of its death with a profound emotional response. Alzamora’s ceramic busts, adorned with raw minerals and flora, pay homage to the natural world while engaging in a contemporary dialogue about sculptural portraiture.
Finally, Alzamora’s “Irrational Experiments” will take place at the KuBe Art Center in Beacon, NY, from July 19, 2024, to January 20, 2025. This exhibition extends the artist’s exploration of the human form, distilling it to its essence through elongated and featureless sculptures. These works exist in an anonymous space, representing a universal human experience that encapsulates both modernist and surreal aesthetics.
Emil Alzamora’s artistic journey is one of inquiry and emotional depth, as he navigates themes of beauty, uncertainty, and hope through his sculptures. With three compelling exhibitions scheduled for 2024, audiences can expect an immersive experience that challenges perceptions and evokes empathy, making Alzamora a significant voice in contemporary sculpture.
