Elly Dijkshoorn, born in Vlaardingen, Netherlands, is a talented artist whose work reflects a deep connection with memory and exploration. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, Elly primarily works with acrylic paint on birchwood panels, often incorporating materials like photographs, paper, and textiles that resonate with personal and collective memories.
Elly describes her artistic process as one of layering and discovery: “Usually, the image of my work is created in layers of covering and discovery. Never from a well-defined idea… in a process that has been ongoing for years.” This approach embodies her belief that art emerges organically, allowing for surprises and revelations in each piece.
In recent years, Elly has been inspired by her visits to the Moermanboerderij, a historic farmhouse in Vlaardingen, where time seems to stand still. Her latest exhibition, titled “Verblijven en vertrekken. Een zakdoek voor de dokter,” features fifty photographic panels that capture the atmosphere, traces, and memories of the various rooms within the house. This exhibition reflects on the stillness and beauty of forgotten spaces, evoking a sense of nostalgia.
Currently, Elly is taking a cautious approach in her artistic journey, stating, “At the moment, I’m taking it a bit easy outwardly… I am trying… researching… not knowing… and finding. Always in process.”
There are many testimonials about Elly Dijkshoorn’s art, such as that of Marleen Bos, who highlights the importance of understanding the artist behind the work. “Many people in Vlaardingen surely know Elly’s art, but how has she become the person she is today?” Bos reflects.
“I believe it’s valuable to listen to someone’s motivations, doubts, and pivotal moments. Listening to one another inspires and enriches our community.”
Elly Dijkshoorn embodies the essence of creativity, intertwining art and life in a journey that tells unique and poignant stories. Her ability to express emotions through her works has inspired and engaged the community, transforming ordinary encounters into extraordinary experiences. Through her art, she offers a profound glimpse into her inner world, inviting others to reflect on their experiences and find meaningful connections. Her work not only reflects her personality but also serves as a vehicle for sharing and mutual understanding, making her contribution to the cultural landscape a valuable and lasting presence.
