From November 27, 2024, to January 27, 2025, the Museo del Corso in Rome will host a powerful exhibition titled “Chagall a Roma: La Crocifissione Bianca” (Chagall in Rome: The White Crucifixion). Curated as a part of the artistic events surrounding the 2025 Jubilee, this exhibition offers visitors an opportunity for deep contemplation through one of Marc Chagall’s most emblematic works: The White Crucifixion. Originating from the Art Institute of Chicago, this remarkable painting stands as a poignant reflection on suffering, hope, and the human condition.

“The White Crucifixion,” created in 1938, is a profound response to the increasing violence and persecution faced by the Jewish people during the rise of Nazism in Europe, particularly following the Kristallnacht pogrom. Chagall’s choice to center Jesus Christ on the cross acts as a poignant reminder that he embodies the suffering of not only Jewish people but all oppressed groups throughout history. The painting intertwines symbols from Chagall’s Jewish heritage, emphasizing universal themes of pain and divine hope.

This exhibition has been organized by the Dicastery for Evangelization in collaboration with the Fondazione Roma, aiming to bridge contemporary art with spiritual inquiry. With free admission, visitors can engage with the powerful symbolism encapsulated in Chagall’s work, igniting reflections on faith, suffering, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Visitors can expect an immersive journey that allows for a deep encounter with Chagall’s complex and captivating artistry. The layout encourages contemplation, leading guests through the emotional landscape of the painting and its historical context. The experience is designed to resonate beyond the visual, prompting reflections on broader themes of existence, consciousness, and belief.

The exhibition will be housed in the beautiful Palazzo Cipolla, a historic venue that enhances the significance of the artwork.

The Museo del Corso is a new cultural destination established by the Fondazione Roma to enrich the city’s artistic landscape. Since 1999, the museum has evolved into a comprehensive institution focusing on inclusivity and community engagement, emphasizing the importance of art in society.

The museum comprises two primary locations: Palazzo Cipolla: The exhibition space dedicated to temporary high-quality art displays. Palazzo Sciarra Colonna: Home to a valuable permanent collection that illustrates Rome’s artistic history.

Palazzo Sciarra also features an impressive cabinet of coins and an extensive historical archive, enriching the museum’s offerings. The “Chagall in Rome” exhibition at the Museo del Corso promises to be a thought-provoking and emotional exploration of one of the 20th century’s most significant masterpieces. Visitors are encouraged to take part in this artistic and spiritual journey, honoring both the past and the ongoing quest for hope amidst adversity.
